Karen Spärck Jones (1935–2007) was a British computer scientist. Her specialties were natural language processing and information retrieval. Spärck Jones had a long history in experimental investigations of human language and was the originator of the Inverse Document Frequency measure in information retrieval. Awards Spärck Jones won in her lifetime include Fellowships of the American and European Artificial Intelligence societies, Fellowship of the British Academy, the ACL Lifetime Achievement Award and the Lovelace Medal of the British Computer Society.

Spärck Jones advocated for greater representation of women in computer science. Her slogan was "computing is too important to be left to men."

  • Lena Söderberg's photograph is an image from the November 1972 issue of Playboy magazine. A crop of the image is often used in image processing experiments. While it is a non-explicit image, it is a sexualized one.
  • The Python and PyStar workshops are short introductory programming workshops in Python focussed on women. They are similar to the RailsBridge events in the Ruby community.
  • Boyfriend-transmitted geekdom is an issue for women in geekdom where, if they happen to have been introduced to a geek skill, geek interest, or geek community by a former or current male partner they are always viewed as an impostor geek.
